We're all lonely people
We go around looking for someone to spend time with. We call out friends for lunch, we go clubbing with a group of people, when we study, we need company. We get attach and marry because we cant bear to be thinking of spending time alone in the future and that we like the fact that we have someone waiting for us at the end of the day and someone thinking for us throughout the day.
We shout and make noise so we get noticed, we get irritated at people and bombard them wth guilt trips to make them remember you. We send emails to acquaintances to try to keep the connection because the more the merrier. We blog to let people know how we feel, to let them know we're more than just hollow shells so people who read can see more of us than normal people and they will remember us. We read people's blogs because we have an innate need to find out more about people we care about, make ourselves part of another's life, so we dont feel lonely ourselves.
We have psychatrists to understand the affectual problems we have so it doesnt affect our relationships with others, we pay counsellors to maintain relationships so they dont break away. we have conference meetings, tea gatherings, functions, formal dinners to unite the group and present both solidarity and company so the entity does not seem alone.
In school, we have important lectures on the power of networking, we have communication classes, we have marketing.
When we compare someone who does everything by himself (ie. watching a movie by himself, eating by himself, living by himself) with someone who is constantly with people (have a family, many friends, weekends are always in the company of others) and rate the latter with a happier scale, we are telling the world that we think happiness stems from interaction with others and happiness stems from eradicating loneliness.
Im not saying that being lonely means not being happy. There are different extents of loneliness right? Not being attached, not having friends, not having God, not having a family... When a part of it is filled, are we not happier? Sometimes, one is enough to encompass or make up for the other, but generally, we would like to have them all isnt it?
We are all looking for company, some may turn to music, some may turn to books, some may turn to work, but we are still... looking and searching, consciously or subconsciously, i assure you, we are looking.
